Alexa is one of our recent grade 12 graduates featured in the 2015-16 Youth Ballet Company and is enrolled in Pre-Journalism at the University of Regina. She began her dancing career at the age of 3 years old and was accepted into the Company in 2010. In her limited free time she enjoys listening to music, reading and writing. Alexa plans to follow her passion for writing in a post-secondary journalism program or follow her passion for dance in any way she can.
Dance has impacted Alexa’s life in many ways. “Dance has become my outlet for expression…dance is in my heart, my soul, my every reason to be.” She explains that she dances, “To live, be free and be me.” Not only has dance become an integral part of who Alexa is, but dance has also helped in her academic pursuits. “Dance has helped me figure out how to manage my time between dance class, doing homework (in the hallways at the studio) and everything else in between. It has made all the difference.”
Michelle McMillan, the Artistic Director at the Youth Ballet Company describes Alexa as a focused and hard-working student. “She is incredibly respectful of her instructors, her fellow dancers, and the process of dance practice. She also has been an assistant for several years and loves helping our young dancers find the joy in dance.”
If she could encourage those young dancers she would say to them that, “There will be days when all you want to do is lay in bed and not go to class. Make sure to go those days because they always end up being the most fun. These are also the days when you discover even more things you love about dance.“
Alexa would like to thank her teachers for not only showing her the art of dance, but also for helping her discover things about herself that she had never seen before.
