Karen Rose is a choreographer, dancer, actor, director and educator.
Since receiving her Bachelor of Arts in Dance from Simon Fraser University, her work has taken her across Canada and Europe, including The Vancouver International Festival, Dancing on the Edge, The Guelph Contemporary Festival, New Dance Horizons(Sk), Tangente, The First Nations Fringe Festival (BC),The Place (UK) and The Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Her most recent film, ‘Helenka,” has screened worldwide.
Ms. Rose has been the recipient of many awards and grants, including the Saskatchewan Arts Board, The Canada Council, The Ontario Arts Council, and The Counseil des Arts et Lettres du Quebec. Most recently, Ms. Rose has focused on The Music and Dance Project, (MaDP). The ‘Remembrance Solos’ were performed in the first MaDP, 2017, and second MaDP occurred in 2019. Previously, her choreography has been presented by NDH’s Stream of Dance Festival, Nuit Blanche (Regina), The Cathedral Arts Festival, The Vancouver International Dance Festival, Dancing on the Edge Festival of Contemporary Dance (7 seasons/ 20th Anniversary), Dance on the Saskatchewan, New Dance Horizons ‘House of Dance,’ Dance on the Saskatchewan, The Guelph Contemporary Dance Festival (10th Anniversary), The Canada Dance Festival, City on the Edge, Calgary Off the Edge, First Nations Fringe Festival, Tangente and The Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Other performances include Studio 303, Foufonn Electriques (Mtl), The Vancouver Fringe, The Montreal Fringe, The Firehall Arts Centre (Vanc), Women in Crisis Fundraisers, and various other independent theatres across Canada and the UK. Choreographic commissioned work includes The University of Colchestor, Spirit Song Native Theatre Company, and YBCS. Theatrical presentations include plays and musicals in London’s Off-West-End (Boys in the Bar), UK, Australia, and various films and videos, including Much Music Canada.
Dance companies Ms. Rose has performed with include Kokoro Dance, Mascall Dance, La Compaigne Monique Giard, Harupin Ha, Dancetheatre David Earle, Mappin Dance, THEVARS, and The William Louther Dance and Theatre Co. She has also worked with many notable independent choreographers, directors, and artists. Ms. Rose has recently directed her first dance film, ‘Helenka. ‘ Screening highlights include Dance for the Camera (NYC), Sans Soucci Festival of Dance Cinema (Co), MADdance Screen Salon (To), Sao Carlos Video Dance Festival (Brazil), and Reeling Dance on Screen (Ed). On the theatre stage Ms. Rose has performed roles from Chekhov to Shakespeare to Tremblay to comedy improv, and has directed, including “The Complete Works of William Shakespeare.” Film lead roles include the feature film ‘3 Days’ and ‘Travesty Towers.’ Other films, videos, and commercials have played a role in her repertory. As a teacher, Karen has taught technique, improv, and composition across Canada, including the University of Waterloo, YBCS, Harbour Dance, NDH, GMD, and Dance theatre David Earle. Ms. Rose is currently teaching Contemporary Dance, Composition, Senior Glee, Advanced Glee and Theatre Workshops with The Conservatory of Performing Arts.
